Brand Strategy: What Makes a Good Marketer?

The four Ps of marketing:

  • Product

  • Price

  • Place

  • Promotion

Successful marketers know the difference between the four Ps, how to effectively use them, and are thoughtful about implementing strategies that market to their target audience. There are many steps that come before the promotion of your content and product. Good marketing involves understanding the market condition, conducting proper research, and executing accurate targeting and positioning whereas bad marketing solely focuses on gut instincts and promotional tactics.

What other characteristics make for a good marketer?

To really excel in the competitive digital marketing world, companies and their marketers need to understand their own strengths and weaknesses. Assessing the competition and knowing how to operate accordingly will separate the good and the not-so-good. Good marketers will use their strengths and weaknesses to their advantage, learning from how they can improve weak spots rather than throwing in the towel.

It is helpful to be goal oriented and keep track of their numbers using tracking mechanisms and consistent communication among team members. Be bold and charge your way through uncertainty with confidence - don’t cower and run when things get hard.

A good marketer doesn’t delegate tasks that are out of their comfort zone to others. Instead, they step up to the plate and learn something new or uncomfortable. Good marketers take on the challenge and realize that knowledge at any level within your company is powerful and useful. We believe that employees lower on the totem pole should hold just as much of a voice and stance as the employees in leadership positions. Having a collaborative and inclusive team with a can-do attitude will separate your marketing efforts from the rest.

Good marketers are trustworthy, honest, accountable, communicative, consistent, and open. It’s not about placing the blame when failure happens and taking credit for success. Learn from insights on good performance, but also bad performance. Put in the work for your own, as well as your company’s, professional and personal growth and see the results pay off tenfold over the long run.
